5 Things Every Car Owner Should Know About Their Vehicle

5 Things Every Car Owner Should Know About Their Vehicle

When you own a vehicle, it’s important to know certain details about it. While we’re not saying you need to be an expert in checking all kinds of maintenance items, there are specific items you should know in case an issue arises! Knowing these will help you feel more confident behind the wheel. Check out Town North Mazda’s list of 5 things every car owner should know about their vehicle.

1. Year, Make, and Model

It sounds obvious, but you’d be surprised at how many drivers don’t remember all three of these items, especially vehicle year. These details are important to know whether you need them in an emergency or just need to order a part for your vehicle online.

2. VIN

Your vehicle’s VIN, or Vehicle Identification Number, is a 17-digit number that allows you to identify details about your car. These include the manufacture date and place, make, model, engine size, and other details. The VIN of a car doesn’t change. You definitely don’t need to memorize it, but you need to know where it’s located (normally this is where the dashboard meets the windshield on the driver’s side). Your VIN is useful if you’re ordering a part, talking to your insurance company or a mechanic, or if you want to look up a used car and see its history.

3. Maintenance Schedule

Unexpected costs when it comes to your vehicle are never fun. You can decrease the chance of this happening, however, by keeping up-to-date on your vehicle’s maintenance schedule. Check your owner’s manual and make a list of things you need to do and how often they need to be done. Each vehicle is different, so for all of your parts, fluids, and more, read your owner’s manual!

4. License Plate Number

This is another item that sounds like a given, but again, you’d be surprised at how many don’t have this memorized. Knowing your license plate is useful in emergencies or when filling out a variety of forms. If you’ve recently changed license plate numbers or have trouble remembering, store your license plate number on your phone or write it down somewhere and carry it with you until you memorize it!

5. Proper Tire Pressure

It’s important to fill up your tires when they’re low, but what most people forget is that you shouldn’t fill them up too much! Each car can differ, so make sure you read your owner’s manual to see what the proper tire pressure is for your specific vehicle. Over-filling your tires could cause issues later on or hinder your car’s driving capabilities. The service team at Town North Mazda can also answer any questions you might have about tire pressure.
