How to Unlock Your Steering Wheel

2021 Mazda CX-30 Front Interior

When was the last time you tried to drive off, only to realize that your steering wheel has locked itself up? So annoying, right! What causes this? Usually, it’s an anti-theft ignition lock feature. If someone were to break into your car to steal it, they won’t be able to drive off with your car because they’ll need the key to deactivate this feature. So, let’s all take a deep breath and begin to appreciate this often overlooked feature. In the meantime, though, you’ll need to know how to disable this feature easily for yourself. Find out how to unlock a steering wheel below, courtesy of the Town North Mazda service team.

Unlock Your Steering Wheel: A Step-by-Step Guide

We’ve all tried to start our car, but for some reason, the key won’t turn over. We’ve seen impatient drivers smack their steering wheel, and others yell at it. You would never do this, we’re sure. Fortunately for us all, unlocking a steering wheel is easy. Here’s what to do:

  • Turn the wheel in the same direction you did when the wheel was originally locked: Not sure which direction to pull? Try both — the wheel will move a bit when you pull in the right direction.
  • While holding your steering wheel in either direction: Insert your key into the ignition and attempt to start the engine.
  • If the wheel doesn’t unlock and/or the engine doesn’t start: Turn the wheel to the other direction and try again.
  • Avoid Using Brute Force: You can’t use brute force to unlock a locked steering wheel; you may damage parts of the steering mechanism. Instead, follow the steps above while applying pressure.
  • Try a Different Key: If you can’t turn the key, the problem may be the key itself — not the steering wheel. The key may be worn and can no longer engage the car’s tumblers. If you suspect a problem with your key, Town North Mazda can make you a new one.
  • Your steering wheel should now be unlocked!

It’s that simple. Your steering wheel wants to know that you’re not stealing the car! Simply turn the wheel back towards the direction you left it in when you parked. If this happens to you a lot, then keep your wheels straight when you park. Sure, the anti-theft mechanism won’t be activated, but if you’re just running inside someplace quickly, then you might not need it activated. Use this feature consciously – take control!

How to Lock Your Steering Wheel Intentionally

As earlier agreed, locking your steering wheel has its benefits. If you’re parking your car in an unsecured area, you may want an extra level of security. Look for cameras on poles or in the corner of buildings. If there isn’t any security, then locking your steel wheel intentionally can make it more difficult for someone to steal your car. To lock your steering wheel intentionally, follow these quick and easy steps:

  • Turn off your car and take the keys out of the ignition.
  • Turn the steering wheel one way or the other until you hear a click.
  • Your steering wheel is now locked until you return.
  • Follow the steps to unlock your steering wheel until you’ve got the hang of it!
